I sometimes hear the derogatory term “cafeteria Christian” bandied about in Christian circles. The irony is that it is almost always used in hypocritical judgment of someone else’s lifestyle. Truly, anyone who claims that they do not pick and choose which parts of the Bible they follow is either dishonest or delusional. Nor should anyone even try to follow all Biblical laws and customs in this day and age. It would be anachronistic, immoral and even illegal in many cases.
But even in Jesus’ time, wasn’t he often considered by the scribes and pharisees to be the equivalent of a ‘cafeteria Jew’? (See Matthew 15:1-11, Mark 7:1-16, Mark 2:23-28)
In all honesty and humility, I freely admit that that I am one of those so-called “cafeteria Christians” but I really wouldn’t have it any other way.
