Other Gods In the Bible

Foster_Bible_Pictures_0074-1_Offering_to_MolechI was thinking about Exodus 20:3 today, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me”. It seems a strange way to word that commandment. Why not just say, “Thou shalt have no other gods”, period – end of statement? The other way makes it sound as if it is alright to worship other gods as long as YHWH is number one in your book. I don’t think that this is what YHWH meant. Some translations say “Thou shalt have no other gods besides me.”  Better, but still it makes one wonder what other gods YHWH was talking about. He is supposed to be the only god after all. Why would He feel jealous of false gods and idols [Exodus 20:5,34:14]?

Whatever the reason for the commandment, I thought it would be interesting to read a list of all the other gods mentioned in the Bible along with a brief description of each one:
